Amway Defends Direct Selling, Touts ‘Made In The USA’

Amway surpassed Avon Products in 2012 to become the world’s largest direct-selling company, thanks to a steady, drama-free international expansion over the years into key markets like China, a bigger focus on nutrition products, which are less prone to sales fluctuations than beauty products, and the ability to attract and keep sales representatives (whom Amway calls ABOs, for ‘Amway Business Owners,’ and who now number 3 million.)

In 2013, its sales rose 4.4% to $11.8 billion, helped by growth in China, its biggest market, and one where Avon’s business has collapsed since a big bribery scandal hit that company a few years ago. (Avon’s business is struggling in almost every key market.)

As a privately owned company, Amway has been spared the drama that has slammed some of its other direct-selling peers that faced regulatory and investor scrutiny: personal care products maker Nu Skin Enterprises  NUS -3.63% was fined earlier this year by Chinese authorities over its product claims, while nutrition company Herbalife  HLF -0.10%  is in the throes of a battle with activist billionaire investor Bill Ackman, who claims it is operating an illegal pyramid scheme.

Amway Chairman Steve Van Andel, the son of one of the company co-founders, recently spoke with Fortune about criticisms of the direct-selling business model, its China success, and the next step in Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Amway’s international expansion. Van Andel, who recently served as the Chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, also addressed the value of “Made in the U.S.A.” and the prospects of more manufacturing coming back to the U.S.

What is Amway’s take on some of the attacks on the direct-selling model?

“Every industry has its critics, but a lot of the talk that happens today is more of a financial thing. Somebody’s looking more at how to drive a stock price up or down, than it really has to do with the business itself.”

“We continue to have thousands and thousands more (sales representatives) come on every day, so there are a lot people who really like the business and the business model for the industry.”

You have begun to do clinical trials on some of your nutrition products (which make up 45% of sales compared to 25% for beauty and 24% for home goods)—in the absence of medical claims, you are not required to, so why do it?

“We’re even starting to do clinicals on a lot of our nutrition products in much the same way that the healthcare industry does clinical trials—to show efficacy, and it’s something that no one’s ever really done before.”

China is your biggest market. Some other direct sellers, notably Avon, have stumbled badly—what did Amway do right?

“Not only are the employees Chinese, but the face of the business is Chinese too. We always took the approach from the beginning that we need to make to sure that when people look at our business, even though they know it’s a U.S. business, they know it’s been adapted to China.”

You get 90% of your sales abroad—what are some of the still untapped markets for Amway?

“There are a couple of areas where we could do better—particularly in Latin America. We’re not doing as well as I think we should do. Our focus in the last decade has really been Asia—there continues to be a lot of opportunity in Asia, but at least we are now well grounded there, whereas we may be not as well grounded in Latin America.” (Brazil is now Avon’s largest market and a fast growing one for beauty products in general.)

How about Russia, a notably promising beauty market but a turbulent place for Western companies?

“Anybody that’s in Russia or Ukraine right now, it’s always a little bit tenuous—and it’s a little bumpy—that’s part of doing business there, You have to accept that.”

Amway is opening four new U.S. manufacturing facilities- why is ‘Made in the USA’ important?

“We listen to our customers, and when it comes to nutrition products, they like nutrition products that are made in the U.S.”

“For us, Michigan is just a natural place to go. Sure we can look at different places in the U.S., but nutrition is not an easy thing to manufacture—and we’ve already got some based there.”

Put on your U.S. Chamber of Commerce hat for a minute—can U.S. manufacturing come back in a big way?

“They’ve lost more manufacturing jobs by becoming more productive. Everybody’s way more productive now in the facilities they have. I’m not sure that that will ever come back- I think people are going to try to be as efficient as they can.”

Tupperware Struggled Greatly In 2014

For Tupperware Brands Corporation, 2014 has almost been the inverse of 2013.

The stock started 2013 near $62 levels and continued to move higher to end the year at over $90, whereas in 2014 the stock started to decline from the $90 plus levels and currently trades near $64 levels. With 90 percent of its revenues coming from overseas and dollar riding high vs. other currencies, the future also doesn’t seem pleasant for the company.

Tupperware Chairman and CEO, Rick Goings, was on CNBC to discuss how strong dollar is impacting the company and the measures taken by the company to limit its impact.

"Its peaks and valleys with regard to it. We have done regression analysis, we have had a market basket of about 45 countries and when you put it all together, yep, this year, it’s a headache, but sometimes you're a windshield and sometimes you're the bug and over a decade it's been pretty neutral," Goings said.

Emerging markets that Tupperware is focusing on are showing signs of weakness. When Goings was asked the outlook for his company keeping this in perspective, he replied, "Well, I think we've got enough currents that are the wind at our back in these emerging markets. The big populations there, limited earning opportunities for women and in the emerging middle class, I think that it helps you overcome what’s happen with currency or any decline in spending in those kinds of markets."

Shares of Tupperware closed Monday at $63.78, down 1.91 percent.

Ackman Going After Herbalife… Again

Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF) is back in the spotlight yet again, thanks to Bill Ackman’s firm, Pershing Square Capital Management. This month marks two years since the activist investor publicly announced his short of the nutritional supplements company.

Now his firm accuses Herbalife distributors of “routinely making false, dangerous and illegal medical claims to potential customers.

Pershing Square issued a press release making these new allegations this morning. The firm also posted a video about it on its anti-Herbalife website. The video allegedly shows some distributors of Herbalife’s products violating regulations set forth by the Food and Drug Administration and also an injunction issued in California in 1986. That injunction demanded that Herbalife and its distributors stop making the illegal medical claims immediately.

The firm’s representatives reviewed publicly available video that shows Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF) executives making medical claims about the company’s products as well for more than 30 years. Pershing Square said the multi-level marketing company can’t deny knowing about this practice because high level executives like CEO Michael Johnson also made allegedly misleading statements.

Distributors name several medical benefits

In the video compiled by Pershing Square, distributors name a number of medical issues that Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF) products can supposedly help with and in some cases possibly cure. Among the problems named are asthma, diabetes, hypertension, bronchitis, migraines, arthritis, weight loss, cellulitis and high cholesterol.

According to the firm, distributors receive training, often at events sponsored by Herbalife itself, to make “false medical claims in order to lure potential requires to purchase large quantities of products and to attempt the Herbalife ‘business opportunity.'”

Herbalife addresses California injunction

According to the Financial Times’ Dan McCrum, Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF) describes the injunction Pershing Square mentions as “a legal approval of its business.” The company reportedly made those comments in written arguments in a civil suit it settled recently in California. Herbalife paid $850,000 to settle claims that it made unproven health claims.

Aron And Cathy Parker; 12 Years To Become An Overnight Success

It was some time ago when I heard a leader on stage say, "Would it be worth it if for 4 years if you weren't successful and then made 6 figures on the 5th year? What if it took 10 years? 15 years? Would it still be worth it?" For most, the answer is absolutely. 

Most of us spend decades in our job working only to make progress in baby steps with a ceiling cap looming above us. The promise from network marketing is what keeps people going.

It's what kept Aron and Cathy Parker going, even though they both started on their own separate paths 12 years ago. Their story has become one that defines what the network marketing industry is about.

What many people earn in a year is what Aron and Cathy have just earned in a single month at DubLi; $41,000*. But it didn't come easy. There were times in their network marketing career where they were on WIC (a type of government welfare program).

Their decision to sign up with DubLi didn't come easy. Their network marketing career had picked up momentum in the last couple of years even though they had struggled in it for so long they began to see success in their last company, finally reaching the 6 figure mark. 

When asked why they signed up with DubLi even though they had finally seen success? Aron's response is simple:

If I didn't do this it'd be the biggest mistake of my career and I needed to take a huge leap of faith." That huge leap paid off.

Although they still love and use the MLSP tools to help them in building DubLi, as well as earn a passive income from MLSP, their full focus is on their current team. Aron and Cathy both take on their own roles in building their business but are both working night and day helping individuals reach their own pinacles of success as well. 

Aron says what really changed for him is he stopped treating his business as a hobby. "Anyone can do what it takes, but not everyone does what it takes. My 'WHY' became a desperate 'WHY'. That's when I finally started to do what it takes."

I asked Aron what he thought about goals, something I ask all leaders in the industry, and expected the same generic answer I'm always given. Aron's response surprised me and I found it refreshing.

"99 out of 100 goals don't come true and you're setting yourself up for failure. If you really were going to get it, you would. I don't set goals, I set decisions." 

Since signing up with DubLi they've been making waves, hitting the Vice President level on October 30th, taking less than 90 days. They attribute their success to spending one on one quality time with their team.

They use both belly to belly building and online marketing and their mission is to help others achieve the same success, or better, as they have. 

Aron and Cathy met through the network marketing industry. They had both made the decision to start their careers independently of each other and continued to build their own businesses over the years. Now, they work together.

I asked Cathy what message she has for other women out there. She shared that women have a natural ability to lead and nurture and need to be encouraged to build more than they are now. Women have an intuition that would help them strive. 

As a couple, they work with equal leadership. While Aron handles more of the internet marketing Cathy is on the creative side. They encourage those that are married to try to get their spouse involved as much as possible and have as much clear communication as they can. 

In closing, I asked them both what the single most important aspect was in becoming successful —

Cathy's answer was 'mindset' and Aron's was "How bad do you really want it? If you really want success, you will do what it takes, no-matter how long it takes!" 

They're excited about DubLi because they don't have to change peoples buying habits and customers can join for free, thus they have a high customer sign-up rate. When they said they're excited about building their team, they proved it by answering their team calls around the clock and getting in the trenches with them. They've developed an online marketing system for their team that will be launching soon, taking their business even further than it already has. 

In speaking with them during our interview, the excitement from Aron was palpable while Cathy had a relaxed intensity. No longer standing in the shadows of top income earners of the industry they've now become a force to be reckoned with. If their decade of struggles resulted in a $40,000 month, we can only imagine what will happen with the road blocks out of the way. This is a couple to keep an eye on.
